Introduction:
General Motors (GM) has unveiled plans to invest approximately $4 billion over the next two years to expand vehicle production at its U.S. manufacturing plants. The investment will support increased output of both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs), enhancing GM’s capacity to produce over two million vehicles annually in the United States.
Features:
This significant announcement follows GM’s recent commitment of $888 million toward its Tonawanda Propulsion Plant near Buffalo, New York, aimed at advancing production of the next-generation V-8 engine.
Expanded Manufacturing Plans by Location:
- Orion Assembly (Orion Township, Michigan): Beginning in early 2027, the plant will commence production of gas-powered full-size SUVs and light-duty pickup trucks to meet ongoing market demand. In turn, GM’s Factory ZERO in Detroit-Hamtramck will focus exclusively on assembling electric models including the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac ESCALADE IQ, and GMC HUMMER EV.
- Fairfax Assembly (Kansas City, Kansas): The plant will start producing the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox in mid-2027, following a strong 30% year-over-year sales increase for the newly redesigned model in Q1 2025. Fairfax is also on track to begin production of the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV by year-end and is slated for future investments to support GM’s upcoming generation of affordable EVs.
- Spring Hill Manufacturing (Spring Hill, Tennessee): Production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer will be added in 2027, joining current output of the Cadillac LYRIQ and VISTIQ EVs as well as the Cadillac XT5.
This comprehensive investment underscores GM’s dual commitment to ICE and EV technologies while reinforcing the company’s leadership in U.S. automotive manufacturing.
